"We now have a range of tools and techniques we can refer back to as well as increased confidence in our approach."
Alongside grant funding, we also offer non-financial support to enable grant holders to strengthen their capacity, skills and capabilities in different areas. In this case study, Sharon Colvin, CEO of 3D Drumchapel, tells us how her experience with The Lens, one of our additional support delivery partners, supported the organisation in its development of an additional capacity building strand.
Background
3D Drumchapel was established in 1997 to make a difference in the lives of children and families in Drumchapel, Glasgow. It offers a range of both universal and targeted programmes and sessions, focusing on building strong family foundations, promoting self-esteem, developing support networks, enabling positive parenting and child development, and promoting improved health and wellbeing.
The Lens is a social enterprise that provides training and peer support to organisations which uncovers the ideas and talent which can drive impact and effectiveness.
Motivation for Attending Lens Training
Testament to how funders aim to work collaboratively in their additional support offers, Sharon was first introduced to the Lens training through The Robertson Trust, and subsequently enrolled following a further support offer from William Grant Foundation.
It was an opportune moment. 3D Drumchapel was just about to launch 3D Futures, an initiative which packages the organisation’s services, learning, and expertise into a capacity-building model for other communities. Adding this training, consultancy, and mentoring offer to its existing direct service delivery marked a significant development for the organisation.
The training was tailored to the needs of individuals transitioning into new operational paradigms. Meanwhile, the small class sizes and one-on-one coaching sessions were particularly beneficial for deep and personalised learning.
Experience and Benefits
The Lens training sessions covered topics essential for 3D Drumchapel’s new initiative. Specific benefits included:
- Stakeholder Engagement: Training on engaging new stakeholders provided actionable insights, enabling 3D Drumchapel to approach new partners effectively.
- Strategic Planning: Sessions on broader strategic planning helped in rethinking the organisation’s approach from service delivery to capacity building.
- Resource Utilisation: Practical tools and exercises, such as mural planning, were used to visualise and strategise the new initiative's development.
The knowledge and tools acquired from the training were implemented in the planning and execution phases of 3D Futures. The impact included:
- Enhanced strategic clarity and direction for the new initiative.
- Improved stakeholder engagement techniques.
- A repository of tools and slides that could be revisited as the initiative developed.
In 3D Drumchapel’s words:
“The training was exceptionally well-delivered and impactful. It really wasn’t a huge investment of time but the level of expertise and niche focus provided us with timely, relevant, and practical support as we prepared to develop an additional capacity building strand to our work.
“We now have a range of tools and techniques we can refer back to as well as increased confidence in our approach. It was such a good experience and I’m sure there are many others who could benefit massively from this training.”
