Let’s talk about monitoring and evaluation

Please note that The Robertson Trust has published its new Giving Strategy. This sets out the priorities we will have when awarding funds through our open grants programme. The existing application form and guidelines can still be used until July 31st. In line with our existing procedures, we will aim to assess and present all applications received by this date to our September Board meeting. In the event that we are unable to do so, your application may be held until our November meeting. In such cases a member of staff will contact you and provide any assistance required to realign your application with the new Giving Strategy. Find out all you need to know here.

These days, good monitoring and evaluation practice should be a key component of any project or service your organisation delivers. Done effectively, and it will help you to:

  • see what works best for the people you seek to help and identify any areas for improvement;
  • understand and celebrate the differences you are making;
  • demonstrate your impact internally and to others in the sector.

Ultimately this will help you to deliver better outcomes for your beneficiaries.

We appreciate it’s not always easy. Whether it’s time constraints, lack of resources or confusion around the best approaches, our funded organisations regularly tell us that monitoring and evaluation are the areas they struggle with most – and we want to change that.

In 2019, we will use our blog to share regular content around best practice and invite experts to contribute guest posts with their own tips and experience.

We will speak to some of our funded organisations to find out more about the approaches they’ve embedded into daily practice to make evaluation less burdensome and more fun, and share some of the strongest, real-life reports we receive, which we hope will bring some of these approaches to life.

We will also share information about relevant events. Through our ‘funder plus’ approach, our current grant holders can receive free monitoring and evaluation support in the form of workshops and bespoke support delivered by  Evaluation Support Scotland.

While effective monitoring and evaluation does enable you to show funders the difference your work is making, we want to highlight the range of other benefits and show how the most effective organisations are now using their learning to improve services and communicate more effectively both internally and externally. We also want to show that it can often be carried out with the addition of just a few simple tools and techniques.

We’ve already produced a short guide which highlights some of these, which can be downloaded here, and a simple video which offers some best practice advice around setting outcomes and activities. In the meantime, we suggest signing up to our mailing list below, in which we’ll share the latest updates directly to your inbox or following us @RobertsonTrust to keep up-to-date with our content.
